The GFWC Women's Club
Founded in 1897 as the Women’s Reading Club, the Manistique Club began with 25 members dedicated to study, literature, and open discussion. It joined the Michigan Federation in 1904 and the General Federation in 1916, expanding its focus to civic improvement.
Through the years, members have led countless community projects—from sponsoring Victory Gardens in the 1920s to beautifying parks, reforesting 40 acres, and creating the city’s central park and youth center. The club continues conservation efforts through Project Petunia, partnerships with Rotary and Cloverland Electric, and invasive species removal.
Cultural and charitable initiatives have included plays, fundraisers, student scholarships, senior teas, and support for local seniors and Bay Cliff Health Camp participants. During COVID-19, members purchased masks and shields for hospital staff.
The club promotes literacy through book donations, the Little Free Library Project, and Epsilon Sigma Omicron. Its century-long legacy is preserved at the Schoolcraft County Historical Society and at GFWC’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C
